We at Johnson’s Mechanical Inc. have been working in the HVAC industry for many years, and we are thoroughly familiar with a wide range of heating and cooling systems. One type of air conditioning system that has become increasingly popular in recent years is what’s known as a chilled water system. As the name suggests, chilled water systems do not rely on chemical coolants as other AC systems do but instead use low-temperature water to cool the air and remove humidity. In this article, we will go over the main components of these systems to help you understand how they work.

Components of Chilled Water Systems

  • Chiller – One key component of chilled water systems is, naturally, the chiller. This is the part that removes heat from the water, cooling it down. The chilled water can then absorb more heat from the air around it, which cools the air and makes your space more comfortable.
  • Cooling Tower – The second component of chilled water systems is the cooling tower. These structures are designed to spread the water over a large surface area to allow heat to dissipate more quickly.
  • Pump – All chilled water systems also use pumps to move the water throughout the building, supplying cool water to remove heat and humidity. The pumps also move warm water back to the chiller and cooling tower, where it can come back down to the right temperature to be used again for cooling.
  • Air Handling Units – Lastly, chilled water systems use air handling units to make the air in the room interact with the chilled water so it can be cooled off.
